The Gingerbread Queen

Connie Mannella and Daniela Abatematteo

In the kitchens of Hampton Court Palace in London, preparations for the Christmas banquet are in full swing. Everyone wants to impress the Queen. The Master Baker has found an ancient cookbook at the market and crafts a gingerbread cookie never seen before. But something in the pastry shop isn’t going quite right… What is happening? Perhaps not everyone knows that the American tradition of gingerbread cookies, now widespread throughout the world, actually has European origins. This story is set at the court of Elizabeth I Tudor to bring the gingerbread man back to the place where it all began. The setting and the bilingual text (English-Italian) offer educational insights for exploring the marvelous Elizabethan era. The final pages contain the recipe and templates to experiment and create the famous gingerbread treats. Reading age: 6 years and up.
