‘As a child, my sister thought a swan was just a male duck, and I believed a pear was simply an apple with a handle. I was told some things weren’t true, but about others, I’m still not so sure. For instance: if you plant a tree upside down, do the branches become roots and the roots become branches? When do we finally sift through everything we were told as children and decide what to keep?’
