Grandmother Tongue

Federico Mattioli

There are six thousand officially recognised languages in the world. Between 50% and 90% of them will disappear by 2100. My grandparents’ language, Emiliano, will not survive—nor will Guaraní, Welsh, Saxon, or Ainu. Grandmother Tongue is a theatrical investigation into how and why languages vanish, die, or are killed.

Not the mother tongue, but the grandmother tongue. A language without a state, literature, or schools. Passed down solely by word of mouth.
