Amàru

ADRIANO POPOLO RUBBIO

A contemporary dance performance that explores memory and nostalgia through childhood, family bonds, and the warmth of remembrance. “Amàru”, a Sicilian word meaning “bitter,” captures the sweet melancholy of the past as it resurfaces, suspended between joy and heartache.

In a sweltering summer room, adults rediscover fragments of their childhood: a child wearing their mother’s clothes, a sibling journey filled with conflict, love, and the longing to be one another—games that transform the everyday into fantasy.

The music, a blend of Mediterranean tradition and modern compositions, guides the bodies in a dance that weaves together the real and the imagined, the ancient and the contemporary. Memories emerge like echoes of forgotten folk songs, interwoven with gestures that evoke tangible recollections—of the sea, of home.
